"MAKING THE BALROG"
Jesper "Balrog" Regel
Well, this has been a long time in the making...literally. Hundreds of hours
were pored into this project and Jesper is proud. I think, as many of you will as well, that this is his greatest work
to date. If only we could get him working for some toy company that would make molds of his work and get this stuff out to the public. Without further ado...here is the way this bugger was built...but first...some quotes from the creator himself.
Quotes from Jesper: "I'm really proud of this one, and it's been an awfull lot of work !!! I had to promise my wife I'll never do such a huge and time intensive piece
again unless I got a job in the Toy Industry and get paid "big bucks" for it! I really have to take a little customizing break now for a week or two, or she'll get really mad ...."
In order to construct the Balrog, this is what Jesper started with (actually several trips were made throughout the process...but you get the point...tons of Sulpey and paint):
- Time it took to get made: about 140 hours
- Costs: about 120 $ - 28 packs of FIMO: 2.00$ each
- 8 Games Workshop Colors: 2.50$ each
- 2 x Sunburst Yellow
- 2 x Chaos Black
- 1 x Skull White
- 1 x Blood Red
- 2 x Fiery Orange
- 4 Rolls of strong Aluminum foil: 2.00 each
- 1 Sculpting Tool Set: 8.00$
- 1 Special FIMO Glue for repairs: 8.00$
- Screws, Wire and other Stuff: 20.00$
BODY: The first step was to build a wire frame
and skeleton which was covered in Aluminum Foil. The foil body was then shaped into a rough body form. The Aluminum-Foil Body was then covered with FIMO/Sculpey. Step by step the the sculpting got more and more detailed to the point of completion prior to baking.
WINGS: The inner wings
were contructed with small
steel strips which were first shaped like the Balrog's Wings, then covered in Aluminum Foil and actually screwed directly onto the body.
TAIL: The Balrog's tail is made of marbles
(YES...MARBLES). The marbles are covered with aluminum foil. Starting with larger marbles (near the main torso) and getting smaller as the tail fades to its tip. The use of marbles allowed for the tail to be bent and remain pliable before finally baking the FIMO sculpted tail.
HEAD: The most difficult parts of the Balrog were by far the Head and Wings. A nervous breakdown was narrowly avoided with construciton of the Balrog's Wings.

PAINTING: Painting took a while and lots of paint, but the result is by far the finest Custom Jesper has ever accomplished.

He can sleep in peace once again and his wife won't proceed to bask him with the pots and pans...at least until the next project comes about...he is thinking of accomplishing a Custom Vin Diesel figure from Pitch Black...but don't tell his wife...yet!
FINISHED CUSTOM: Finished and painted, this looks like the mighty Balrog from the movie...great work and good luck constructing your own.
