“Space is always thought of as an empty, barren vacuum, but even here, in the absence of atmosphere and at the mercy of wild temperature extremes, life exists. Fleeing a fleet of Imperial Star Destroyers, the Millennium Falcon encountered one of the legendary inhabitants of the void when the ship was almost swallowed by a giant Space Slug. The vast creature had taken up residence in an asteroid, somewhere in the Anoat Sector, near the frozen planet Hoth. Mistaking the beast's maw for a cave, Han Solo had flown inside and put the ship down in the monster's gut to elude hunting Imperial fighters. It was only while cleaning parasitic Mynocks off of the ship that he discovered the true identity of the "cave" they had entered.
Space Slugs are huge, silicon-based life-forms, more mineral than animal, but nonetheless alive. Anchored by their tails, the young slugs feed on the very rock to which they are attached through burrowing, root-like tendrils. These tendrils both fix the Slugs to the asteroids or airless planetoids they call home and also suck essential minerals, upon which they thrive. Any morsel that happens to come within snapping range of a Slug's wide mouth is gobbled up, as well as all manner of tiny space-borne particles that drift into the gaping jaws. Inside a large Space Slug's belly, smaller space-borne creatures can sometimes be found. Energy-sucking Mynocks feed like parasites, hanging on the inner walls of the gut and trying to avoid becoming meals themselves.
Growing slowly and steadily over millennia, Space Slugs can reach gargantuan proportions. The most massive specimens recorded reached almost a kilometer from nose to roots, though legends speak of great monsters even larger than that. The one encountered by the Millennium Falcon must surely have been one of the biggest. In time, the oldest Slugs eventually petrify and become caves themselves, returning to the stone from which they grew.”

Packaging..........

Packaging Internal/External: The Space Slug diorama is a very cool new Enviorama from the Sideshow Star Wars team. The packaging is sweet…the new 30 th anniversary look is impressive. The imagery showing the actual piece on the outside of the packaging on multiple sides is a pleasant plus! Internally, the notched Styrofoam fits this heavy piece to near perfection and easily protects the massive slug and the tiny Falcon within! The biggest plus of the internal packaging is the added peg/hole mechanism that ensures a correct placing of the two halves together and further ensures the safety of the content! This Empire Strikes Back piece is well protected…and sure to land on your display shelves safely and securely!
Sculpt/Accuracy..........

The Overall Sculpt: The sculpt is very nicely done and the size is okay. The work and detail on the walls of the asteroid look great on the piece and the height of the walls is a nice addition to create even more drama and dimensionality to the piece. The angle of the space slug and trajectory of the Falcon look very near to the actual film frame! The sculpt work nicely recreates the dimples and cracks in the asteroid that is the home of the Space Slug!

The fault in this piece is really not in the SCULPT per say, but this is the right location to cover
what may be the biggest downfall of the piece. For you accuracy-insane collectors, the Falcon is just WAY too big. If you remember the scene, the falcon barely squeezes between a gap in the Slug’s TEETH. The falcon in this piece is much larger than the teeth on this piece. But, to Sideshows creative credit, the size of the Falcon is large enough to know that it is indeed
included in the piece AND at the right spot upon departure from the Slug’s inards! The size of the piece OVERALL is perfect for a display case, and the size of the Falcon is just right to show off the entire scene as a whole. So…not entirely accurate with respect to scale, but great for the collectible!
The detail on the Slug itself is great…the tongue is nicely textured as well as the spacing and of the teeth! Would have been nice to have one of the teeth missing or space apart further to help recreate the famous scene…if only in spirit! Again…the texturing of the walls and the base of the piece is excellent…great attention to detail on the surface of the asteroid to create a very OLD rocky appearance…multiple cracks and multiple scars from other, smaller asteroid collisions.

Display Base: This underside of the display base has a very nice feature. You have the option to hang this sucker on the wall. While is IT heavy and likely requires a couple weighty mollies, it will likely look very cool hanging next to other wall-mounted Star Wars collectibles! A nice added feature for those who are short on space in their Star Wars curio cabinets!
Paint Application......

The Paint Scheme: The Space Slug Enviorama doesn’t appear to have required a massive amount of paint application or planning. The asteroid, afterall, is mainly rock and pretty much all one color. The Space Slug, for that matter, is pretty much all one color as well. Where Sideshow took some creative liberties…and kudos to them for doing so…is in creating a LIFELIKE scene for us to enjoy! The coloring of the asteroid with reds, browns, blacks, and even hints of greens and yellows help immensely in bringing this piece to life. Further the paint scheme indulges in cleaverly shadowing and dusting the Slug itself with multiple colors giving it life and creating a much more fearful looking beast!
The main drawback of the paint application…and it is pretty blatantly obvious to any Star Wars aficionado is the paint coloring of the Millennium Falcon. The Falcon was a very GREY ship and had LOADS of different shades of GREY on it’s hull. The Falcon in this piece is almost exclusive WHITE and LIGHT GREY. Sideshow could have done a much better job of getting the GREY of the Falcon down to a much more movie accurate appearance.
OVERALL..........

The epitomy of OLD Star Wars beasties, the Space Slug was a MASSIVE reason that Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO ended up at Bespin and eventually in the hands of Boba Fett and the Empire. It is truly interesting the effects of such an old, slow, and mechanical beast can have on the universe! In general this piece is FANTASTIC…and one has to really get down and look very close to find the minor faults that we did. A casual Star Wars fan would absolutely LOVE to have this piece…but perhaps this piece is not meant for the casual fan…and hence the criticisms. But…and I said it in the beginning…the piece WORKS! It is a very cool addition to the Enviorama line from Sideshow and Star Wars…and effective re-creates a very cool scene from The Empire Strikes Back! Any Star Wars collector better consider themselves LUCKY to have this piece in their collection…not to mention that it IS still available!
