In summary: The 2003 San Diego Comic Convention was another awesome convention and tons of wonderful Lord of the Rings items were for sale and on display. Memorable items include the huge replica of Orthanc that looked to be some 20 feet tall and the lifesized statues of Gollum with the fish. While some companies chose to limit their displays to a minimum (TOYBIZ), others went all out (Play Along), much to the delight of all in attendance. Be sure to check out our exclusive pictures below in each section and also be sure to visit the links to other site to get ALL the Lord of the Rings coverage from the convention, from Toys to Statues to Cards to Games...it is all right here! Companies participating in the event include Play Along, Sideshow/WETA, Games-Workshop, Toybiz, Art Asylum, Sabretooth Games, and many more. If you see something we have missed, please don't hesitate to drop us a line with a link.

Convention Highlight: Probably the most talked about event so far was the Return of the King preview. A 3-minute preview of the 12-minute The Two Towers DVD preview for the upcoming installment. The most talked about item, at least here, was probably the King Elessar Statue from Sideshow/WETA...looks like the Gondorian King in all his glory!
Convention Disappointment: Definitely Toybiz!!! They showed up VERY late and had nothing new to show with the exception of the Crossbow Uruk-hai warrior...which, technically, we had already seen in FEbruary at Toyfair 2003 (though that one was a 2-up).
Play Along Toys: Tons of boxed items shown as well as the packaging for the three exclusives (Gollum from KB, Ambush at Weathertop from AFX, and the Rohan Army 10-pack from TRU). Also had a boxed Helm's Deep Deluxe Play Set on display.
18 Jul, 10PM est: Our very own Dragonspy Brian provides the following pictures from the Play Along Armies of Middle-earth Booth. A Very busy booth to say the least. Check out the sweet Helms' Deep Set!

17 Jul, 10PM est: Dragonspy Pat writes in with news that the Play Along booth is prehaps the most popular booth at the convention. He further states that the convention exclsuive (Twilight Ringwraiths and Twilight Frodo 3-pack) is quickly selling out. Perhaps Play Along can weather the storm after all!
Sideshow/WETA: Looks like nothing new yet for Return of the King, but they have an awesome display as expected. They always seem to represent the Lord of the Kings in Classy Style!
18 Jul, 10PM est: Dragonspy Brian provides the following pictures from the Sideshow/WETA display...tons of stuff...a few new items...that Limited Edition (only 36 will ever be made) Bronze Gandalf looks so SWEET. The lifesized displays look awesome...especially the Gollum statue and the SPOILER King Elessar!

17 Jul, 10PM est: This just in...King Elessar REVEALED. The below picture shows Aragorn as the crowned King of Gondor. He has some sweet armor and is all decked out. Could this be the coronation or perhaps the wedding.
Games-Workshop/Sabretooth Games : The new Tradable Miniatures game from Sabretooth Games (affiiliate of Games-Workshop) has a ton of stuff on display. Go check out the sweet pictures of upcoming items! This looks like a very fun game to get in on...especially for those of us who SUCK at painting minute details.
18 July 1230PM est: John, editor over at LOTRG.com added a bunch of images of the upcoming Sabretooth Games stuff. There was one interesting item that we have yet to identify...care to take a stab?

New Line Cinema: Dragonspy Brian sends in these shots from the New Line Booth. Looks like there will be a 7-Up promotional as Return of the King hits theaters. New Line was displaying the Two Towers DVDs as well. And that Orthanc display...I want that in my Back Yard...it would scare all the neighbors...muhaha!
